Brass Plated Senufo Bird - Ivory Coast
These bird sculptures - likely a type of native hornbill - have traditionally been associated with the Poro; a society of initiated men within the culture of the Senufo people of the Ivory Coast. In some villages, they would be kept in the 'sacred grove' of the Poro to guard its members. A symbol of wisdom, intelligence and authority, these sculptures are said to reflect those qualities in both the birds themselves and the men they represent.
