The West African country of Benin is known for the quality of its bronzes which tradition dates back to the 16th Century. The British Museum has a large collection of these, now the subject of dispute between the two countries. It was always regarded as a noble craft for which guilds were established to train artists in the skill of creating bronze plaques and sculptures. This is a charming example of this ancient decorative art.
