This lovely Indian damchiya or dowry box would make for a character coffee table or bedroom storage. These chests with their contents of saris, jewellery, kitchen utensils and other desirable items would accompany the newly-weds to the husband’s home where the couple would take up residence. It was therefore important that the damchiya was of sufficient beauty to impress the future in-laws.
