Banded Bogolan Mud Cloth - Mali
This tribal art from Mali has a history of many centuries and still survives in contemporary Mali society where the symbols, handed down from parent to child, vary from one dyer to the next. The cloth, handwoven by tribal weavers, is stained by immersion in mud for a period of a year. Thereafter to artist takes over and decorates the cloth in a series of arcane symbols. These textiles hold their own as wall hangings or throws and are often made into scatter cushions prized by decorators and collectors around the globe.
