Assorted Glass Trade Beads - Ghana
These glass beads from Ghana carry with them the symbol of a centuries long trade between Africa and the Near East. Arab dhows have plied the coast of Africa since the 16th century. Beads were used as currency in trade between Africa and its northern neighbours. Glass in those days was an exotic display of wealth in African tribesmen and women who could afford them. They still retain their historic and colourful history and, mounted on a simple metal stand or loosely laid on a tabletop they are appealing decorative objects.
